16-year-old Helena Muffly wrote exactly 100 years ago today:
Sunday, July 16, 1911: Went to Sunday school this afternoon. I was the only one in our class. I initiated my new dress for the first time. Wouldn’t it be nice to have as many dresses as you wanted, and wear them whenever you pleased.
Her middle-aged granddaughter’s comments 100 years later:
Grandma’s mother finished the new dress earlier in the week. Grandma probably wished that she had some dresses that looked similar to the ones in Ladies Home Journal.
A Hundred Years Ago

Thanks for the nice note. I enjoy searching for things to illustrate the diary entries. It’s fun when I come across photos that illustrate an entry as nicely as these did.
One of my grandmothers would have just turned 14 in June 1911 and I wonder if she might have looked at these same dresses in the Ladies Home Journal.

Thanks for the nice note. I regularly print two copies of the daily postings and put them into notebooks–one for my father (who isn’t a computer user) and one for myself.
When I first started to think about doing something with the diary I considered doing a book instead of the blog–but never got organized enough to do it. Posting the daily entries and commentaries enables me to work on the diary in more manageable chunks. Sometimes writing each posting almost feels like I’m writing an index card on a topic–and that it might be fun to organize them into a book someday, but who knows. In the meantime I’m just enjoying doing the blog.
