I like that it’s a straightforward pitch, rather than trying to trick us into thinking that buying beans will make our family love each other or whatever imagery modern ad campaigns attempt.
Henry J. Heinz introduced the marketing slogan “57 pickle Varieties” in 1896. He later claimed he was inspired by an advertisement he saw while riding an elevated train in New York City (a shoe store boasting “21 styles”). The reason for “57” is unclear. Heinz said he chose “5” because it was his lucky number and the number “7” was his wife’s lucky number. However, Heinz also said the number “7” was selected specifically because of the “psychological influence of that figure and of its enduring significance to people of all ages.
I love this! The way they explain exactly why you should buy their baked beans. Not because itโs fashionable or healthy but because they bake them right and the grocer stocks them. ๐
That is a wordy ad.
Ads a hundred years ago were often wordy. My sense is that people were more accepting of ads with lots of text back then.

I hadn’t thought about the ad from that perspective; but you’re right, it is a straightforward pitch.
What does that 57 varieties mean?

Hard to believe there can be that many types of pickles for real ;)!
Mr. Heinz sounds like someone who was good at marketing. Maybe he exaggerated. ๐
LOL

There’s some sort of circular logic around the idea that you should buy the baked beans because the grocer stocks it. ๐
Good wholesome food will usually outlive trends and fads. I love baked beans.
Baked beans are a wonderful comfort food.
Without a doubt.
Ha! Just ate some last night. The label hasn’t changed much but mine don’t have pork in them
It continues to amaze me that Heinz Baked Beans have been around for at least a hundred years.
Interesting ad.. never knew that Heinz made canned beans, but then maybe itโs because I have also bought Bushโs beans.
Stores around here sell Heinz Baked Beans. . . maybe they are only available in some areas.
Truly a brand that has been around for years. My mother used to say that they cost a little more but were better than cheaper brands.
It sounds like the voice of experience – and that she’d had some bad experiences with some other brands of canned beans.
