Friday, March 20, 1914: Home 2:30. Went to sleep this afternoon and when I awoke was sleepier than ever.

Her middle-aged granddaughter’s comments 100 years later:
Grandma—
You came home at 2:30!! What were you doing? You must have been having fun to have stayed out so late.
This is getting to be a habit. On February 18, 1914 you wrote:
Ruth and I went to a party tonight over at our cousin’s. We walked to town and from there the party was conveyed in sleds. Didn’t go very fast as the roads were full of snow. My, but we did have the eats. Bet there were some, who made it hard for their poor tummies. Got home 2:30 a.m.
Isn’t Grandma just recovering from surgery? 🙂
She got her tonsils out on March 11. I guess that she must be better.
I like Grandma. She made the most of the times that were different. So very many days she had nothing to report, nothing was doing. I rather suspect she was being honest. Parties and outings must have been few and far in between.
I agree. She seems to honestly report how she was feeling and the activities that she finds interesting–though a little more detail often would be nice. 🙂
I love the remark, “Was ‘he’ at the party?” Times don’t always change all that much, do they? 🙂
Young people both then and now have similar worries, joys, and feelings. Some things never change. 🙂
Helena’s turning into a party girl! At least that’s what I hope she was doing until so late–she deserves some fun!
She does seem to be enjoying herself–though I must admit that the mother in me thinks that she’s staying out too late for her own good.
Oh, my. 2:30. I can’t imagine what Grandma’s parents had to say about THAT! But, Grandma, please….we need details, girlfriend!
I’m also amazed that parents allowed daughters to stay out that late back then.
I hope she had fun when she did get to go out – she deserved it!
Diana xo
She sounds happy–though sleepy. 🙂
Funny when you’re young you’ll wear yourself out hoping something will happen.
I wish that I had as much energy as the kids. I can’t remember the last time I stayed up until 2:30. Sigh. . .
Helena is growing up – and out….. 🙂 ….. or was!
She sure was. 🙂
And to think my OWN father said to me (30 years ago) that there’s NOTHING GOOD that a single girl can be doing past 1 a.m. LOL!
My parents said the same thing. 🙂
Sounds like grandma was a wild thing!! lol We often forget that our parents and grandparents were once young and carefree. It is nice to see that she has fun after all that hard work on the farm.
Wow, that was late for that day and age. Livin’ La’ Vita Loca…HA.
