18-year-old Helena Muffly wrote exactly 100 years ago today:
Friday, March 21, 1913: Seems rather queer to be eighteen. I realize I am getting old. Am tugging away at my old essay. It is almost finished.
Her middle-aged granddaughter’s comments 100 years later:
You might feel old but, you’re still young!
I almost feel like I’ve been growing up with you over the past several years. You were just 15 when you began the diary—and this is the third birthday we’ve celebrated together via this blog.
Happy Birthday, Grandma!!
A birthday is a good way to begin a new season. :-).
Remember when being 18 seemed old and 30 year olds were ancient?
Happy Birthday to Grandma! (Sheesh: I can almost remember being 18….!)
Happy Birthday Miss Muffly. Today is my Grandfather’s birthday also but he’s much OLDER than you… It’s his 133rd birthday in this year of 2013 🙂
This is one of the most touching posts yet! Birthday wishes through the generations shared with those who want to know you both well. Happy Birthday to your Grandma and congratulations to you for discovering and valuing the diary of her young life.
Happy, happy birthday, Grandma.
Happy birthday to her! I had similar feelings about my birthday yesterday, except I’m a bit older than 18.
They tended to marry much younger then.
A Happy Birthday to Helena – I wonder what she is thinking about now that she turned the magical age of 18!
Makes me giggle to think of 18 as being old. Now, 21, that’s a whole other story!
I cannot even remember when 18 seemed old. It’s so long ago. I’m sure it was the same for her one day.
I guess way back in 1913, you might have been considered old at 18. Did women get married pretty young back then?
God love her! That’s so funny. I thought I was big stuff when I turned 15, then my dad pointed out that I was half way to 30!
Yeah, score! Three days before my own birthday! Happy birthday “Grandma”! 😀
