
So many companies and products come and go within the course of just a few years, so I’m always amazed when I find an advertisement in a hundred-year-old magazine for a food that is still available. According to Wikipedia, in the early 1900’s, Richard Hellmann owned a delicatessen in New York City. He made a tasty mayonnaise that he served with the deli foods. It was so popular that he began selling it to other stores, and in 1913 built a factory to produce Hellmann’s Blue Ribbon Mayonnaise. The company has been sold several times, but Hellmann’s Mayonnaise (now available in several varieties) is still around.
It’s still the only mayo I use! 💕

Your comment led me to research the ingredients both then and now. There are some similarities across the years – but there are also key differences.
1926 – I zoomed in on the label on the jar of mayonnaise in the old advertisement and was able to read the list of ingredients. They were: Eggs, oil, vinegar, spices, sugar, salt.
2026 – I went to the Hellmann’s website and found the ingredient list for Hellmann’s Real Mayonnaise: Soybean oil, Water, Whole eggs, Distilled vinegar, Egg yolks, Salt, Sugar, Lemon juice concentrate, Calcium disodium EDTA (used to protect quality), and Natural flavors.
And it’s probably the most widely available brand of mayonnaise in the UK too!

A New England favorite! Even the vegan version is delicious.
I don’t think that I’ve ever tasted the vegan version. I’ll have a give it a try. I have tried the Olive Oil version and liked it.
It’s pretty good, and lower in saturated fat.
