I hadn’t thought about the purpose of a “free” gift – but, you’re right, I bet they were building a data base. The methods have changed across the years, but the purpose is the same.
My appetite is never going to be so tired that I’d put tongue on the menu. Even an exhausted appetite wouldn’t do it. And no, I haven’t tried it, and I hope I’m never forced to!
In other words… when you donβt know what to fix because nothing sounds good then give this a try…. hubby loves tongue… me not so much.. have a hard time not seeing that tongue slurping up itβs nose!π€’π³π

Years ago I tried tongue of some sort that a neighbor cooked. My appetite got very tired of tongue very quickly. I wonder if tongue is cheaper than steak? Mrs. Allen’s cookbook seems to be how to make meat go further.
I’m guessing that tongue was a relatively inexpensive meat a hundred years ago; now I bet that it would be expensive, if it could even be found at all.
Back about a hundred years ago my maternal grandmother was raising her 4 children on a very tight budget. She got tongue because it was cheap. Her youngest daughter when presented with dinner that night politely said, “No thank you, Mama, I don’t like where it licks.” It sure stuck with my grandmother because the story was told at least once a year.

I had tongue in the home of a relative. I would like to have stuck out my tongue, but good manners stopped me. The person who cooked it is dead, and I wonder if tongue finally killed her.

Forgetfulness is bliss. Actually, the taste wasn’t bad. The appearance was gross and revolting.
Not even a no thank you bite! My mother enjoyed beef tongue but I never tried it – ever. Now if my appetite is tired I go out to dinner!! π

Agreed – though I’m something surprised how some of the variety meats seem to be making a comeback as gourmet fare these days.
