Her middle-aged granddaughter’s comments 100 years later:
Since Grandma didn’t write anything a hundred years ago today, I thought that you might enjoy a 1914 advertisement for Dromedary Dates.
I was not only amazed that the brand has been around for so long, but also by how “packaged’ it looks with the packet of dates in the larger box.
Hmmm. . . I’m getting hungry for Date Bars. Maybe I’ll have to look for an old recipe and make some for the Bake-a-thon. 🙂
One of my favorite Christmas recipes is a little gem called California Fruitcake. It’s nothing but dates, apricots, and pecans, held together with a light batter. This might be the year to make one of those, too.
mmm. . this sounds really good. I like the old-fashioned cakes with lots of dried fruits and nuts.
I have to get my ingredients together for my bake-a-thon entry!
I’m looking forward to seeing what you make. I bet it will be really tasty.
Yes, the packaging does look very modern.
I couldn’t figure out what the inner wrap was made of. I don’t think that they had plastic back then. Maybe is it was made of waxed paper.
Ooooh, date bars! I LOVE date bars!
Date bars are one of my favorite cookies, but I haven’t made them in years. Seeing this advertisement made me think of them–and I’m thinking that I’ll make some this year.
or stuffed with peanut butter and rolled in confectioners sugar…
. . .though we’ll have to wrap them very carefully so the ants don’t get them. 🙂 I loved your comment about sending dates stuffed with peanutbutter and rolled in confectioners sugar to your brother several days ago–and thought of you when I selected the ad for this post.
At last. Thanks to the ant world I have achieved a degree of fame!
Or stuffed with blue cheese and wrapped in bacon!
mmm. . they sound delicious.
