19-year-old Helena Muffly wrote exactly 100 years ago today:
Saturday, October 31, 1914: This is All Saints’ Eve and the moon is shining brightly. Would have liked to have dressed up and gone out Halloweening.
Her middle-aged granddaughter’s comments 100 years later:
Grandma—
Boo! What a spookactular night! You should have gone to town and had a little fun.
Lack of confidence again or perhaps too old to go trick or treating?
Maybe too old. . . she was 19.
how wonderful this first person narrative is~
I agree!
What an enchanting costume!
I like it, too.
Love the term ‘halloweening.’
The old-fashioned words in the diary sometimes rub off on me, and I start using them. Your comment made we realize that I used the term “halloweening” several times at work today–instead of the usual “trick or treating” .
Oh, that’s great. Wonderful to keep tradition going!
I can’t open you original post, but thankfully this highlighted Box allows me to read it and comment. I do enjoy your posts!
Oh dear. . . I’m not sure why you are having problems. At least you can still read the blog–but it’s really strange. I’m not very good at figuring out technical issues–but one thought is that is might possibly be a browser issue. Have you recently changed the browser you use?.
I like the idea of going out “Halloweening” instead of Trick or Treating.
In any case, after about 12 years of age I felt too old to do any such thing, but still missed it. I suspect that was what Helena was feeling.
I think that you’re probably right that she felt too old.
I like the costume dresses that you add to the posts.
Thank you. . . it’s nice to hear that you like the pictures of the costumes.
Exactly what Dor says above. I also like the idea of homemade costumes.
Your comment reminds me of the the wonderful memories that I have of my mother-in-law making costumes for my children.
Yes, walk in the bright of the moon, Helena.
I agree–she should walk in the bright of the moon. 🙂
I wonder why grandma didn’t go out halloweening…?
Maybe she felt like she was too old . . . or maybe it seemed like too much work to walk to town . . . or . . .
eeek! You have a spider on your dress!!! Jane
Happy Halloween!
I love the dress!
Okay, I’m going backwards … other than not going halloweening, this is a more upbeat entry than the one for November 1st. Wonder what made her more melancholy on 11/1
