Halloween Night

19-year-old Helena Muffly wrote exactly 100 years ago today:

Saturday, October 31, 1914:  This is All Saints’ Eve and the moon is shining brightly. Would have liked to have dressed up and gone out Halloweening.

Her middle-aged granddaughter’s comments 100 years later:

Grandma—

Boo! What a spookactular night! You should have gone to town and had a little fun.

    1. The old-fashioned words in the diary sometimes rub off on me, and I start using them. Your comment made we realize that I used the term “halloweening” several times at work today–instead of the usual “trick or treating” .

  1. I can’t open you original post, but thankfully this highlighted Box allows me to read it and comment. I do enjoy your posts!

    1. Oh dear. . . I’m not sure why you are having problems. At least you can still read the blog–but it’s really strange. I’m not very good at figuring out technical issues–but one thought is that is might possibly be a browser issue. Have you recently changed the browser you use?.

  2. I like the idea of going out “Halloweening” instead of Trick or Treating.
In any case, after about 12 years of age I felt too old to do any such thing, but still missed it. I suspect that was what Helena was feeling.

  3. Okay, I’m going backwards … other than not going halloweening, this is a more upbeat entry than the one for November 1st. Wonder what made her more melancholy on 11/1
