18-year-old Helena Muffly wrote exactly 100 years ago today:
Thursday, February 19, 1914: Guess I just dozed this morning. Don’t ever sleep well after being out so late. Had a tired feeling all day.
Her middle-aged granddaughter’s comments 100 years later:

No wonder Grandma was tired. She got home from a party at 2:30 a.m.
The previous day she wrote:
Ruth and I went to a party tonight over at our cousin’s. We walked to town and from there the party was conveyed in sleds. Didn’t go very fast as the roads were full of snow. My, but we did have the eats. Bet there were some, who made it hard for their poor tummies. Got home 2:30 a.m.
I can’ imagine coming home in the middle of the night and immediately sitting down to write a diary entry. My gut feeling is that Grandma wrote both of these entries at the same time on the 19th.
And the question remains…was she with him?
I wondered the same thing.
I know how she feels!
It brings back memories of when I was young— though I don’t ever remember staying out until 2:30. Midnight or 1 am was a late night for me.
I was mostly home at a reasonably sensible hour but I have done some 4am or later parties. Not a good idea!
“Don’t ever sleep well after being out so late” ?
Wait…Did Grandma make a habit of this, and not share that fact with her diary?
This is the second time in the diary that she’s mentioned being out very late. On Feb. 17, 1911 (when she was only 15-years-old) she wrote:
“I went to a party this evening in McEwensville up at Watson’s I had a very pleasant time. It was almost two o’clock when I got home.”

It’s strange how she stayed out so late when she was very young (which I find really shocking), and then it seemed like she didn’t have many late nights for the next several years until this diary entry.
Ah, youthful energy!

I agree. .
Love all the comments: especially “gardenfreshtomatoes”!
I agree. . . There are some wonderful thoughtful (and some thought-provoking) comments.
I remember that feeling!
If only we could be young again. 🙂
Been there! 🙂
🙂
Hmm. I owned an open china cabinet like that early in my marriage. My, how my taste has changed. And the “oil cloth” on the table. Still had that in some of my neighbor’s homes when I was growing up.
I hadn’t thought about it until I read your comment, you’re absolutely right, those open china cabinets were really popular back when I was a young adult.
You see, she did get up too early and didn’t get her sleep. I knew it. Kids today don’t do that. They get home at 2:30 and then get up at 2:30 the next afternoon!
She had to get up and milk the cows. 🙂
Can you imagine? Her mind was probably racing when she got home too.
My first thought was, “At least she’s not hungover.” Then I realized you might not want people thinking that way about your grandmother! 😉
It did cross my mind. . .
oh, burning the candle at both ends as they used to say. Does seem pretty late for a country girl, must have been having a good time.
