Day Filled with Dreams

18-year-old Helena Muffly wrote exactly 100 years ago today:

Tuesday, November 4, 1913:  How can I express my feelings for today? I ask myself this question. I may say that an unlooked for pleasure came to pass and filled my day with dreams. As to whether they will be ever realized the future alone can tell.

Her middle-aged granddaughter’s comments 100 years later:

What was the unexpected pleasure?

Grandma, I’m keeping my fingers crossed that you dreams will be fulfilled.

  1. My goodness! Seems Grandma WAS using “romantic” in the present-day sense! Can’t wait to hear more about the “unexpected pleasure,” and maybe even learn his name!

  2. Oh, good–she’s happy and excited about something! Such a nice change of tone. Tell the truth–have you read ahead? Do you know what’s coming? 😉

  3. Wow – now that your grandmother routine of being in school is over it seems her mind has grown and developed to a higher level of searching the univerise to see what else awits her. In exploring my aunt Hallie’s writings (although she was 15 at the time) are similiar to your grandmother’s in a way. To me it seems both women are seeking more than what young farmwomen of the era might have to offer.
