Her middle-aged granddaughter’s comments 100 years later:
Grandma and her sister Ruth were getting ready for a Halloween party they are going to host.
What foods were they planning to serve their guests?
The October, 1913 issue of Ladies Home Journal had the following suggestion:
Serve ice cream in orange Jack-o’-lantern shells.

Cute idea. I would serve orange sherbet in an orange 🙂
Great idea. . . Orange sherbet should be good served this way.
Never would have thought of this!
Very creative
Cute! I always like the smell of a hollowed orange. My ex mom-inlaw use to make a yummy orange mouse with the juice from a can of mandarins whipped with Philly and dream whip. then you fold back in the orange segments…yummy
mmm. . .the dessert you describe sounds delicious.
Going to try this one.
This looks delicious 🙂
So cute. (And I’m happy Grandma is excited about the party!)
What’s the easy way to hollow the halloween orange rind?
I cut the face out before I hollowed it out. Then I cut the top off, and used a paring knife with a sharp point to loosen the membranes. I then scooped it out with a spoon and scraped the sides with the spoon.
Thanks for the directions!
What a fantastic and unique idea!
This is so cute and a great idea 🙂
Sometimes my days are ‘Ditto’ too Grandma! Cute ice cream idea. My grandchildren will love it.
It is a fun way to serve ice cream. Have fun with your grandchildren!
Very clever. I first interpreted it to mean that the jack-o-lantern pumpkin shells are orange (obviously, but I’m often surrounded by redundancy and have come to accept it), and thought, hmmm, that would flavor the ice cream. Maybe sprinkle a little cinnamon in the shell, to make a pumpkin-pie-ish ice cream flabor? And then I looked closely at the picture…. That’s an ORANGE!
I’m sending this to my daughter-in-law. She’ll love it.
Thanks for sharing your thought process as you looked at this post. It brightened my day and made me smile. 🙂
Love this idea. Plan to use this as a treat for the grandson since he loves oranges.
He’s lucky to have you for a grandmother. I hope he enjoys it. 🙂
I love the idea of ice cream in a pumpkin shell!
This is so neat! I wonder if vanilla ice cream inside would have a hint of orange flavor?
When I made it, I made one for myself and one for my husband. We thought it added a slight orange flavor to the ice cream–though it wasn’t very strong.
Great idea–and what a neat blog! Thank you for sharing your Grandma’s diary with us!
Are you kidding me?……On the way home from Arizona last week, my husband stopped and bought me a HUGE bag of oranges. I searched the Internet today to see what I can do with them. I opened your blog post just before heading to the grocery store. I LOVE this idea and will surprise hubby with a special Halloween dessert tonight. (I think we’re on the same wave length). 😉
I agree–We must be on the same wave length. 🙂 I hope your husband enjoys his Halloween dessert.
It came out well. I used orange sherbet and stuck orange peanut M&Ms in the cut outs of the eyes and mouth.
It sounds awesome with the sherbert and M&Ms. I’ll have to try making it that way sometime.
What a fun idea! And how wonderful to have your grandmother’s diaries!
I love all the Halloween party prep goodies. Really fun to hear how much our ancestors enjoyed the Holiday!
