Based on a little saying at the beginning of the chapter containing pie recipes in a 1923 cookbook, my sense is that even a hundred years ago, pumpkin pie was considered a comfort food and a bit old-fashioned.

And here we are in a world surrounded by pumpkin pie spice!
Pumpkin pie spice sure has taken off in recent years!
Perhaps a bit old-fashioned but the “brightens the eye” says it all. It is a beloved classic for a reason and the absolute favorite of many of the men in my family.
Agree – “brightens the eye” is wonderfully descriptive. I love some of the sayings and poems in old cookbooks.
We only seem to eat it on Thanksgiving. I wonder if others eat it throughout the year.
Pumpkin Pie does seem like a very seasonal pie that is often served just at Thanksgiving – though I personally freeze some pumpkin in the fall, and then make Pumpkin Pies several times throughout the winter and spring.
My son has wanted it year round from the time he was 5! So it’s a staple in our household! Once I learned what rich milk was we were good! Oh and a scant cup in my sugar cream pie! In case you want to know it means not quit full or not packed down and rich milk is now half part whole milk and heavy cream !
Makes sense to me that it’s become a staple in your household. 🙂 Pumpkin pie is delightful.
I love pumpkin pie
Without it I just might die!
I’d eat it morning noon and night
Every bite tastes just right!!
I love it – What a fun poem!
In this case I would simply say that old-fashioned or not, I do enjoy a slice of pumpkin pie, though fresh fruit pies will always be my preference.
Pumpkin pies are good – though cherry pies are my favorite.
My daughter is coming soon, and she’s glad pumpkin is really available so that I will make her favorite pie.
mmm. . . I bet that it will be delicious.
In any era, I would like to try their Pumpkin pie. Yummy!
I think it’d be interesting to try the really earlier ones that were baked or cooked in a pumpkin shell. 🎃
hmmm . . . it would be interesting to know more about early types of pumpkin pie. It would also be interesting to know how the spices typically used in pumpkin pie have changed over the years.
