Her middle-aged granddaughter’s comments 100 years later:
Since Grandma again didn’t write anything a hundred years ago today, I’ll continue telling you how to create a “Christmassy” table. In addition to a centerpiece, Christmas place cards need to be made.
In case you aren’t a creative person, the December, 1914 issue of Ladies Home Journal included twelve “little people and little rimes” that could be cut out and glued onto tag board to make the place cards.
What fun children making the cards must have had trying to decide who got which rime!
Hmm. . .who should get this one?
. . . and, who is the perfect person for this one?
How charming and simple – things sure have changed and become more complicated… May you have a wonderful Christmas and look forward to saying goodby to the old blog and hello to the new!
Thanks for the kinds words. Have a wonderful Christmas!
Love the idea and the artwork on these.
i have vague memories of making place cards for the family Christmas gathering when I was a small child. I think that I used Christmas stickers to decorate them.
So charming! And innocent.
Yes, they definitely evoke simpler times.
Lovely. I do remember that we used to save Christmas cards from year to year and use the artwork on them for various projects. I just don’t remember what the projects were!
I also remember saving Christmas cards for projects. I remember a Christmas card holder that was made by crocheting parts of old cards together to make a dish-shaped holder. I also remember using old cards to make small to/from cards that we’d put on packages.
The 1914 issue of the Ladies Home Journal is so filled with creative holiday ideas 🙂
Yes, it was chock-full Christmas articles, pictures, and ideas. The things that I’ve posted barely begin to scratch the surface. 🙂
Place cards! I love it. I think we’ve lost a lot with our reduction in formality — just once a year, even…
I agree! The old-time more formal tables and meals made the occasions seem more special. I’m thinking about getting some old china out for our family Christmas celebration this year. But the china has a gold edging on it–and needs to be hand-washed. I’m not sure how my family would react that.
Oh boy! That’s a tough decision
I know. 🙂
Merry Christmas!!! Isn’t it wild the way the years are flying??? Soon we will be a hundred years old too 🙂
I agree! I’ve occasionally thought about how my birth date is closer to the times I’m writing about than the present. I guess that shouldn’t seem surprising, but somehow it does. Merry Christmas!
Making place cards with rhymes would be a fun thing to do today! 🙂
What fun! I have a few ideas for rhymes for a couple people. 🙂
Cute – love the vintage look!
So do it. Times were simpler back then. 🙂
