17-year-old Helena Muffly wrote exactly 100 years ago today:
Thursday, December 5, 1912: Around the same as Dec. 3.
Her middle-aged granddaughter’s comments 100 years later:
The December 3 diary entry said, “Nothing much to write.” I guess that it was a slow day around the Muffly house.
Since Grandma didn’t write much I’ll share some holiday decorating ideas from the December 1912 issue of Ladies Home Journal .
Love the decorations!
curtains in doorways–always seemed so mysterious–though I know it is to stop drafts
Interesting that the magazine would include curtains in a featured design. Apparently they were considered practical, yet stylish, back then.
they were–all the best houses had them
I am loving reading about your Grandmother…We are kindred spirits in our love and dedication in honoring the memories of our beloved grandmothers. What a gift you have these in this diary, photos, and actually being on the property on which she lived. Just Beautiful.
I feel the same! My comment was going to be almost identical! Enjoying your posts 🙂
Ilene and A Daisy Garden–Thanks for the nice notes. I have a lot of fun doing this blog and it’s always wonderful to hear when someone enjoys it.
You mean there was a time before inflatable Santas? Beam me back 🙂
Beam me back, too!
They’re lovely. It’s so nice to see this snapshot of Christmas history.
I especially like the natural look of these old-time decorations.
Yes, timelessness is a great quality in decorations. As far as non-plant decorations are concerned, I love things that look traditional, like they might be an heirloom that has been passed down through the generations.
I love that all the decorations are taken from nature…just as I remember my grandparents and others doing. Lovely photos, thank you for sharing them. ~ Marsha
What wonderful memories of your grandparents and the way they decorated!
I love the Victorian Christmas’s!
Si do I! 🙂
That looks like where Martha Stewart show you one of her grand homes decked up for that holidays. What a nice house for 1912!
