Really fun to enjoy this sweet century-old poem, Sheryl. No matter what the century, we humans have our struggles…I like the comforting solution here…bake pies and buy a hat.
I do believe I have a case of ennui! But I feel better now that I know what it is. Perhaps hats are the reason all the ladies in London look so happy. 🙂
Some 40 years ago when I was away at college my mother sent me a greeting card that said “When things are bad and looking worse, keep a cookie in your purse” Mom still bakes the best cookies and we both resort to baking in times of stress – mostly to give away. I suspect that with too much pie, finding a new hat to fit is a bit less depressing than having to go up a size for a new dress!!
Hehe! Good luck finding a milliner now! Baking a pie seems the right thing to do in any day and age!!
Baking a pie works for me.
Such a cute poem. Problems haven’t changed.
It’s nice to hear that you liked this poem.
lol…What ever floats your boat.
🙂
Certainly not! My pastry always goes wrong if I’m stressed, and I hate wearing hats!
Similarly, when I rush when cooking something always seems to go wrong.
Love it Sheryl! Baking pie can be quite relaxing (or stressful!), I think I need a new hat!
How true – making a pie can be either relaxing or stressful depending upon how it goes.

I also thought that it was a fun poem. I’m glad you enjoyed it.
This caught my eye and made me think at once of my great Aunt Nina. No matter what happened in the family, Nina always had a pie ready to serve.
Your Great Aunt Nina sounds like someone I would have enjoyed knowing.
I got my love of cooking from her, I think. I still wish I could cook cabbage the way she did. I’ve never quite figured out her secret to that.
This humorous poem is printed out and on the ‘fridge! I also love the vocabulary words “hie” and “ennui”. Thanks, Sheryl!
It’s wonderful to hear that you thought this poem was worthy of posting on the fridge.

There’s something to be said for hats.
You reminded me of the elevator lady chanting “Third floor, shoes, millinery an daytime dresses.” I never did get off there and buy a hat.
Your comment takes me to the days of the wonderful old downtown department stores.
I loved ours and bought everything there from fabric to stamps.
I like the idea of baking a pie when other things go wrong.
So do I. Cooking can be relaxing.

Until you mentioned dress sizes, I never thought about the advantage of buying a hot over baking a pie.
