Got Home at 2 a.m.

18-year-old Helena Muffly wrote exactly 100 years ago today:

Saturday, January 17, 1914:  I don’t believe I slept at all this morning. Got home at two o’clock. Felt rather queer all day.

Her middle-aged granddaughter’s comments 100 years later:

Grandma–2 am!!!

Awe, the joys of being young–I can’t remember the last time I stayed up until 2.

Probably Grandma couldn’t sleep because of all the thoughts, wishes, and dreams rushing through her head. The diary entry for the previous day said:

Ruth and I went up to Oakes’ this evening. The occasion being a birthday surprise part for Al. Had a very, very fine time. He was there. That’s why I had such a good time.

Based on the way the entries for January 16 and 17 were written, it seems like Grandma wrote them both on the 17th. It makes me wonder how often she actually wrote several diary entries at the same time.

  1. Oh the plot thickens now! :)

  2. Go on. The entries are so short you could do a week’s worth at a sitting. She puts us all into imagination overload trying to imagine what’s going on. But the plot does indeed thicken…..

  3. Wonder how they got home? Walked home with Al?

  4. Hmmmm….I wonder what Grandma’s parents thought of her and her sister getting home at 2 a.m.???

  5. ‘…he was there…’ says a lot.

  6. Not only did she get home at 2 am, I bet those chores were waiting for her that morning!

  7. What else do we know about Al?

    • Not much. I think that is is only the first or second time that he’s been mentioned by name in the diary. I think that have a vague memory of him as a rural mail carrier who delivered our mail when I was a child, but I could have him mixed up with someone else.

  8. I don’t think I’ve ever stayed up till 2.00am…have I?

  9. Now, watch–tomorrow she’ll go back to saying nothing much happened and leave us all hanging! ;-)

  10. One little sentence says it all: ‘He was there’! Lovely :D

  11. Wow, they were out late.

  12. A very fun diary entry! Seems she was smitten or very fond of Al. Feeling queer…must have been that not enough sleep feeling…but perhaps she was twitter-pated all day!
