Sunday School Attendance Pins

18-year-old Helena Muffly wrote exactly 100 years ago today:

Sunday, December 28, 1913:  Went to Sunday School this afternoon for this last time in this year. Would like to say “I haven’t missed any,” but I can’t. The missing amounts to two.

Her middle-aged granddaughter’s comments 100 years later:

I think that this Sunday School attendance pin is from the mid-1900s. Does anyone know if there were attendance pins a hundred years ago?

Grandma—

Don’t beat yourself up for missing two Sundays.  I’m impressed that you made it to Sunday School for 50 of the 52 weeks in 1913.

  1. That’s a very honorable attendance record, Grandma!
I’m not sure when attendance pins came into existence. I remember I had one, but my attendance wasn’t as good as Grandma’s!

  2. I’m impressed as well! Although I still think church and Sunday School would have been social events for Helena and the youth of the day, so to miss a Sunday would have meant a missed opportunity to catch up with friends.

  3. She did great! I am not sure about the pins. :)

  4. 50 out of 52? Pretty good!

  5. Oh, my! I have not thought about Sunday School pins in years!

  6. That’s pretty darn good. If I could exercise as often, I’d be in pretty good shape.

  7. Hi. I remember having a long ribbon where they put stickers when you attended Sunday School. To this day, I like stickers! Jane

  8. I remember that I had friends who had Sunday School Attendance pins, but my church didn’t use them.
