Day Filled with Dreams

18-year-old Helena Muffly wrote exactly 100 years ago today:

Tuesday, November 4, 1913:  How can I express my feelings for today? I ask myself this question. I may say that an unlooked for pleasure came to pass and filled my day with dreams. As to whether they will be ever realized the future alone can tell.

Her middle-aged granddaughter’s comments 100 years later:

What was the unexpected pleasure?

Grandma, I’m keeping my fingers crossed that you dreams will be fulfilled.

  1. I didn’t quite get what your Grandma was saying, tricky language. Was she happy about something this day?

  2. My goodness! Seems Grandma WAS using “romantic” in the present-day sense! Can’t wait to hear more about the “unexpected pleasure,” and maybe even learn his name!

  3. Getting interesting :-)

    What will happen next?

  4. I’m with Aunt Fluffy up there…sounds suspiciously like a “him” to me! :D

  5. Grandma is becoming very poetic…I’d say there is Romance in the air ♥♥♥

  6. Oooh…..I agree with the others: sounds like Grandma’s “in love”!

  7. Whooo Hooo!!! :-)

  8. Oh I am so hopeful grandma’s dreams and hopes will materialize. I’ll bet it is a boy !

  9. Maybe the entry where she talked about romantic was truly about a romantic interest!

  10. My fingers are also crossed. She was certainly close with information, even for her diary.

  11. yep sounds like romance

  12. Definitely sounds like love, sweet love! And ’tis the stuff of dreams.

  13. Oh, good–she’s happy and excited about something! Such a nice change of tone. Tell the truth–have you read ahead? Do you know what’s coming? ;-)

  14. This is quite positive as Grandma had for a while been commenting that there was not much to comment about. This instead is quite a profound reflective entry.

  15. Wow, this is a different sort of comment than usual . . .

  16. Ooh I do want to know!

  17. Maybe Grandpa caught Grandma’s eye… would love to know!

  18. Wow – now that your grandmother routine of being in school is over it seems her mind has grown and developed to a higher level of searching the univerise to see what else awits her. In exploring my aunt Hallie’s writings (although she was 15 at the time) are similiar to your grandmother’s in a way. To me it seems both women are seeking more than what young farmwomen of the era might have to offer.

  19. Would it be cheating to ask when your Helena and your Grandfather did meet?
