Picture of Grandma Wearing Granduation Dress

18-year-old Helena Muffly wrote exactly 100 years ago today:

Thursday, April 3, 1913:  My graduating dress is almost done. I think it will be very pretty.

Her middle-aged granddaughter’s comments 100 years later:

Sometimes I almost tingle when I have a picture of something that Grandma was writing about. Today is one of those days.

I think that this photo is Grandma’s graduation picture—and that she is wearing her graduation dress.

A seamstress in McEwenville was making the dress for her. In a previous diary entry, she described it a plain white batiste dress trimmed with lace insertion and edging.

    1. I don’t know, but since there were few jobs that women could do back then–and seamstress was probably one of those jobs–maybe it wasn’t very expensive.

  1. Do you think that she is holding her diploma in her hand? I have my Grandma’s High School Diploma and it is rolled up the same way. The diploma is one of my favorite treasures that I have from my Grandma.

    1. I think that the picture was taken by a professional photographer. It might just be a fake diploma that the photographer used for the pictures.

  2. Oh, I can just imagine your excitement when you have a photo to go with an entry in Grandma’s diary. This is just wonderful! And, yes, I would think that’s her diploma in her hand!

  3. That’s fantastic Sheryl. I see her holding her diploma, what a proud day for her and her parents. It’s awesome that they went to a studio for professional photo’s, must have felt really special for your Gran and of course 100 years late, the photo is still a treasure.

  4. I was excited to see this post today! She looks beautiful and I love the dress! My daughter is graduating 8th grade this year and I am dying (scared) to see what dress she wants !

  5. I’m sure it is her gradualtion Sheryl, she is holding her certificate. Doesn’t she look lovely though? I will be back, to catch up on some more entries soon. :)
