Picture of Grandma Wearing Granduation Dress

18-year-old Helena Muffly wrote exactly 100 years ago today:

Thursday, April 3, 1913:  My graduating dress is almost done. I think it will be very pretty.

Her middle-aged granddaughter’s comments 100 years later:

Sometimes I almost tingle when I have a picture of something that Grandma was writing about. Today is one of those days.

I think that this photo is Grandma’s graduation picture—and that she is wearing her graduation dress.

A seamstress in McEwenville was making the dress for her. In a previous diary entry, she described it a plain white batiste dress trimmed with lace insertion and edging.

  2. The picture brings your grandmother’s diary to life. Thank you for sharing it with us.

  3. That dress is so pretty. I can only imagine how long it must have taken to sew it. I wonder was it very expensive to pay someone else to make it in those days?

  4. Do you think that she is holding her diploma in her hand? I have my Grandma’s High School Diploma and it is rolled up the same way. The diploma is one of my favorite treasures that I have from my Grandma.

    • I think that the picture was taken by a professional photographer. It might just be a fake diploma that the photographer used for the pictures.

  5. Oh, I can just imagine your excitement when you have a photo to go with an entry in Grandma’s diary. This is just wonderful! And, yes, I would think that’s her diploma in her hand!
