17-year-old Helena Muffly wrote exactly 100 years ago today:
Wednesday, January 8, 1913: Was so lucky to find my report just where I had put it. I feel very much relieved for I was rather worried. Have my part of the dialogue pretty well learned.
Her middle-aged granddaughter’s comments 100 years later:
Where did Grandma find her report card? The previous day she could not find the card, and was very worried about it.
Some things have not changed over the last hundred years. It’s always upsetting when something is lost—though it usually turns up sooner or later.
It’s funny how I usually find lost things where I put them. When this happens I feel annoyed with myself . . .
The Dialogue
Grandma was very involved in the Literary Society at her school and I think that she was memorizing part of a dialogue for an upcoming Literary Society meeting or program.
A Hundred Years Ago 
Preaching to the choir Sheryl, LOL. I don’t want to bore you with details, but I spent 15 minutes the other night looking for my glasses when I briefly went to the kitchen for something. Now I can’t even remember what that was either….OMG.
I guess we’re getting to that age. 🙂
When I couldn’t find something, I used to think that maybe I was getting old enough to start having senior moments–then a very young colleague at work lost something. After searching high and low for it, she said, “I guess I’m tired, I didn’t get much sleep last night.” Now when I can’t find things I also blame it on lack of sleep. LOL

Ha! She found it! And so we know that Helena is sticking to her resolve to study more. Speaking of losing items, I have actually looked for my reading glasses and been told by my husband, “honey, you’re wearing them!” I never thought this would happen to me… 🙂
I’ve been there, too. The same thing has happened to me.
Haha, so she didn’t lose it on purpose! I just posted my grandmother’s high school transcript so this rang a bell for me :).

Report cards. They are so important. Fortunately, I have lost them all. (This is in the face of my usual love for ephemera and documents) Jane

When i was about 16 I found my mother;s old report cards from her sophomore year — a straight A student she was. Then she quit school, got married and became a mom. Over the years, I liked to look at her report cards which were in her jewelery box. Then one day, a few years before she died, I found that she had thrown the report cards out. I felt such a loss–still bothers me because of all of my siblings I was the only one that ever saw all of the A’s.
Times were different back then–and even though women led very different lives than they do today, I think they generally found it rewarding in its own way.
It’s so sad that she threw the reports cards out, though I’m sure she probably had her reasons. I’ve talked with friends about which artifacts they’ve saved from their youth and different people have very different opinions regarding what should be saved.
